We consider the Villa rental agents named on the following pages those most qualified to match Conde Nast Traveler readers with properties. Landing on this list is no easy feat: First, all candidates must complete a 47-question application designed to assess an agent’s competency, connections, and business practices. Agents are required to send us all the preparatory information and questionnaires that they give clients, as well as all other checklists that they use to evaluate properties, and at least one client reference. After carefully combing through these materials, we interview the most promising rental agents to evaluate their user-friendliness, honesty, and familiarity with the villas and regions they represent.
this year, only 46 made the cut. Of those 31 who specialize in our readers’ favorite rental destinations-the Caribbean, Europe, and Hawaii- are listed below, with their profiles. But if you’re looking for a rental off the usual villa path–in, say, Wanaka, New Zealand–seek out one of the 15 superb specialists on page 74. (You’ll find their profiles and reader reviews, as well as those for all of Perrin’s People, online at travelplanners.truth.travel.0 All of these top villa agents know their properties and their regions inside and out. Some have a preponderance of modest cottages, others fairy-tale estates–and we’ve characterized their overall portfolios accordingly, from one dollar sing ($) for the least expensive to four ($$$$) for very expensive homes relative to their regions. Although Pawsat-Dressler does have a few properties for the budget-conscious in her portfolio (see Wendy Perrin’s experience, page 60), most of her villas are sumptuous beach houses furnished with the latest and greatest amenities (Bosch appliances, IPod docks) and a 24-hour concierge who can line up everything from a private heli-hiking tour of Molokai to a pedicurist who makes house calls.
