Looking for that rare exotic feel of Stately Polynesian days gone past? Where remote seclusion surrounds; life is slow; whales can been seen and heard; sunsets inspire your sense of well being; ocean access for water sports is steps out your back door….and yet you are less than 5 miles away from mainstream civilization with all of its amenities. If you are looking for a vacation home and property that is full of heart and soul and NOT ostentatious, yet prestigious and elegant – you must come and experience this 1.5 acre oceanfront sanctuary called Hidden Tranquility.

Stay in Maui’s resplendent historical location of Olowalu – described as “rare; storehouse of royalty property” and adjacent to one of Hawaii’s healthiest and unusual coral reef systems. It’s now Maui’s newest enclave of only a handful of very exclusive residences. Like Old Hawaii , with it’s deep mana – yet offering the privacy and convenience of new. Designed by Glen Mason, an award winning architect renowned for cultural heritage preservation incorporated into new construction. Positioned on the west coast of Maui, the entire property has a wonderful continuance from the progression of a stately yet gradual sense of “arrival” as you drive under the mature indigenous Hala trees, to the approach at the entry courtyard, to crossing the threshold into the entry hall with the immediate “wow factor” of the tremendous shoreline ocean views. The house incorporates authentic design features of 1930s kama’aina architecture – wide verandas, wood floors, spacious rooms with high ceilings, and double-pitched roofs – with “smart house” technology.

The 9300 sf residence (including lanais) is comprised of three buildings around an open space of pools, gardens, and walkways. The grandness of the great room, which flows into the dining area, balances the more intimate embracing spaces of the library and media rooms upstairs. The common areas such as the dining, great room, pool, and gym are on the north side of the home and the private suites are to the south, which allows for entertaining without sacrificing privacy at all. Nearly all rooms open onto lanais and have sophisticated sound/media systems built into the home’s traditional interiors. There are three dwellings. Each is a modern recreation with a nod to plantation-era design, a regal character not just with plantation themes but every single detail. Wide baseboards, crown molding, chocolate heart eucalyptus hardwood floors, make this home feel warm and welcoming, a true sense of Hawaii at its essence.

The main home contains three master suites two with Queen bed, one with a King bed. Each is setup as a suite with a sitting room, bedroom, bath with shower and tub, private lanai, walk-in closet, washer and dryer, and magnificent ocean views. The oceanview ohana has it’s own gate-entrance from the drive, exceptional kitchen, master suite with King bed, bath and outdoor shower. These guest quarters are masterfully linked to the main house by a trellised walkway.

Inside the main house, a real chef’s kitchen connects the gathering areas of the dining room, great room to the pool terrace – easy for “group” cooking as well as a wonderful space for the many celebrity guest culinary artists, who have delighted both quaint and large dinner parties. The intimate library has a perfectly framed window vista of the West Maui Mountains with the Dicky signature double-pitched roof-lines. The entry courtyard mirrors the valley as well. All the stonework bases are constructed from rocks of the Olowalu Valley, ensuring the house is truly grounded on this land. The fireplace in the great room represents more than just ambiance – it’s all about “hearth” and “home”. The third building houses a gymnasium, steam room, and recreation room with pool table.

The 75″ pool is beautifully tiled and is located ever so nicely, weaving it’s way around the main home to the gym/yoga area. While you do have a direct view of the ocean from the pool and built-in hot tub, the way it is set back on the side of the property keeps it very private and connected to the gym and steam room. Due to the unique design features, there is an amazing ocean view no matter which way you face. The additional aquatic pond provides a nice transition to the sprawling ocean lawn, which has hosted many wonderful croquet games. Bocce anyone? You will discover resting in the hammock is one of the great quiet spots. A really special element about this home is that there are fantastic gathering/ entertaining areas, and many quiet little corners to reflect or read.

What else is there to love about Olowalu? – ….Whales, Dolphins, many Turtles, Monk Seals, Spotted Eagle Rays on the shoreline, Nene flying overhead, Kolea returning from Alaska every year to the immense lawn, Monarch butterflies and the unique yellow Olowalu butterflies that love the stately Monkeypods. Views of the islands of Kahoolawe, Molokini and on a clear day even vistas of the Big Island. From the beach, Lana’i and Moloka’i are a treat to see as well. On a still morning, there is nothing better than sipping that early coffee on the ocean lanai as you can literally listen to the whales singing. Maui’s Olowalu reef system is truly magnificent – the double reef creates a really unique lagoon that is almost always calm and walking out to the edge thru the coral heads during a super low tide is an “only in Olowalu” experience. And let’s not forget, one of Maui’s top bakeries is just across the street. Hawaii Hideaways can arrange a basket of goodies delivered first thing in the morning. Olowalu is peaceful /private with a sense of place of being out in the country, but also so convenient to Lahaina and Central Maui. Living here is not just a house on the beach. The old pier, the old plantation manager’s house, the ruins of Kamehameha, the 4th’s sugar mill, the petroglyphs up the valley, hiking along the river and the cultural reserve, all create a really precious neighborhood and a magnicient one-of-a-kind Maui expereince.
