Rates Slashed for Hawaii Vacation Rentals

Tempted to take advantage of the bargain that is Hawaii this winter? The way to get the most space and privacy for your dollar may well be to rent a vacation home. Owners of luxe beachfront properties are offering unheard-of-deals, even for Presidents’ Week and Easter Week rentals that are normally sold out at peak prices by now. Anne Pawsat-Dressler, of Hawaii Hideaways, who is on my rigorously vetted list of the country’s best villa rental agents (see “Villa Values,” June 2008), says that renters have enormous bargaining power at the moment. Here are her tips for negotiating the best rate:

  • If you won’t be filling the house – say, it sleeps ten but there are only six in your party – ask for a discount.
  • If you’re staying more than a week, ask for a reduction based on the amount of business you’re providing.
  • Tell the villa rental agent what your most comfortable maximum price is. “We approach owners of properties that are more expansive and offer them this rate,” says Pawsat-Dressler. “Most take the lower price because they’r hungry for rentals.”
