Hawaii Kai is an ocean-side residential community at the eastern side of Oahu’s south shore. The area is known for its laid back beach community pace and marina lifestyle. While the community lacks options when it comes to resorts or hotels, there are several beautiful luxury vacation rental properties in Hawaii Kai for vacationers to choose from.

Things to Do

With perfect weather and a beautiful tropical landscape, life in Hawaii is meant to be lived outdoors and there is no shortage of activities for guests staying in a Hawaii Kai luxury vacation rental. The Hawaii Kai golf course is just one of 40 places to play on the island of Oahu which means the golfers in your party will be busy! Water activities are a favorite pastime in Hawaii Kai and snorkeling is one of the most popular. Swim with schools of Hawaii’s vibrantly colored fish at the nearby Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. Part of the Marine Life Conservation district, the reefs here are home to an impressive variety of marine life, including our state fish the humuhumunukunukuapuaa and our amazing green sea turtles. The Koko Crater Botanical Garden is another popular attraction. Located on the floor of an ancient volcanic crater, this 60-acre garden is filled with beautiful trees, plants and flowers from around the world. Sea Life Park is located just a short drive away in Waimanalo and makes for a great day trip with the family. The park provides an opportunity for visitors to swim with rays, dolphins, sea lions and even reef sharks. There are also several entertaining shows and educational presentations throughout the day. Hikers can take advantage of the areas hiking trails to explore their surroundings. The Diamond Head trail is just a short drive away and the trek to the summit can be completed in under an hour. Formed more than 100,000 years ago, the peak of the area’s landmark mountain offers an incredible view of the south shore. The Makapu’u lighthouse was built in the early 1900’s and if you visit during whale season, you’ll catch a glimpse of visiting humpbacks as they breach the surface off-shore.

Beaches

Sandy Beach is one of the closest to our luxury vacation rentals in Hawaii Kai but due to its powerful shore break, this isn’t the best choice for swimming. If you are in to surfing and body boarding though, you’ll have plenty of company as this is a popular for location among the locals for both activities. Maunalua Bay Beach Park is also close-by and perfect for water activities like kayaking and paddle boarding. Our Hawaii Kai luxury vacation rentals are all located within 15 - 20 minutes of Honolulu which means the world famous Waikiki Beach is just a short drive away. One of Hawaii’s busiest beaches, Waikiki offers something for everyone. From sunbathing to surf lessons, there is plenty to do both on and off the beach. Because this beach is located in a high-traffic resort area it can be quite crowded but if you need a break from all of the activity, there are plenty of shops and restaurants to occupy your time.

Restaurants and Nightlife

The Koko Marina Center offers some fantastic eateries with waterfront dining. Roy’s Hawaii Kai is a popular restaurant and Sushi lovers will love Gokoku. Executive Chef Katsushia Inoue has designed a menu consisting of traditional Japanese faire and contemporary Japanese-fusion. Harbor Village Cuisine is also located at the Koko Marina Center, and serves up a divine Dim Sum with out-of-this-world seafood dishes; while Assaggio Ristorante caters to those who can’t get enough of Italian cuisine! Assaggio’s combines their great food with ambiance. Enjoy their delicious lobster stuffed ravioli as you marvel at the beautiful views of the marina and magnificent mountain landscape in the background. Honolulu’s Chinatown is filled with lively bars and restaurants and is the hub of Oahu’s arts and culture scene. If you’re looking to combine cocktails and culture, the Honolulu Museum of Art hosts ArtAfterDark once each month. The First Friday Art Walk is another popular outing allowing visitors to explore Hawaii’s thriving arts community. The event combines the arts with a bit of a block party. Galleries extend their hours, street performers line the sidewalks, and the bars and restaurants offer up First Friday specials.

Shopping

Guests staying at a luxury vacation rental property in Hawaii Kai will love the Koko Marina Center. With a great mix of dining and shopping options, the center is home to the area’s closest movie theatre, and also offers up a variety of water activities. A short drive in to Honolulu will have you surrounded by shops and galleries selling everything from crafts to surf wear. The Ala Moana Center is a guest favorite as well. With more than 300 retailers, the center is the largest outdoor shopping center in the world. Luxury brands like Balenciaga and Tory Burch share real estate with Macy’s, Sears and a host of other great shops.
