Developed in 1983, Mauna Lani is a beautiful resort community on the Big Island’s sunny Kohala Coast. Surrounded by top-ranked golf, and world class dining and shopping, the area is made up of hotels, condominiums and some of Mauna Lani’s most beautiful luxury vacation rental properties.
Things to Do
The grounds of this resort community are simply stunning with towering coconut palms, lush green fauna, pristine white sand along the coast, and intermittent breaks of black lava rock. Trails and walkways meander through the community and are perfect for an early morning stroll as you breathe in the fresh ocean air enjoying an expansive view of the Pacific. With more than 1000 etchings carved in to rock by Hawaii’s natives, history buffs will be fascinated by the Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve. The etchings here document the early history in the area and are thought to represent significant occasions or events in the lives of Hawaii’s Natives. The carvings include symbols of people, turtles and canoes. The resort is also home to another significant historical site; the Kalahuipua Fish Ponds. Once a source of sustenance for the Hawaiian royalty who used to fish here, the resort maintains a preservation program for the mullet and awi who continue to make their homes in these ponds. Golfers staying at one of our Mauna Lani luxury vacation rental properties can take advantage of the two area courses, or head over to Waikoloa to play a round at their championship level course. Adventure seekers will enjoy the thrill of an aerial trek with Kohala Zipline Adventures. Their lines soar through the lush forest canopy of the Halawa Gulch making for a truly exciting way to get in touch with nature. Volcanoes National Park is one of Hawaii’s most popular tourist attractions allowing visitors to come face-to-face close with one of Mother Nature’s most powerful forces. You’ll watch in awe as bright lava from the Kilauea volcano flows in to the Pacific. While 6000 meters are located beneath the ocean surface, when measured from base to peak, Hawaii’s Mauna Kea is 10,200 meters, making it the tallest mountain in the world, and one of the best places to get your fill of stargazing. Astronomers from around the globe travel to the summit of Mauna Kea to observe the night sky. Children and adults alike will enjoy Dolphin Quest which allows its visitors the opportunity to swim and interact with some of the ocean’s most majestic creatures.
Guests staying in one of Mauna Lani luxury vacation rental properties have their choice of area beaches. Mauna Lani Bay is directly in front of the resort. Although this is a rocky area, there is a small cove with a sandy bottom which is great for swimming. Makaiwa beach is close by at the Mauna Kea resort. It has a small protected area making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Holoholokai Beach Park is located slight further up the coastline and is connected to the Malama Petroglyph Trail making for a fascinating trek down to the beach. This beach has more rocks than sand, but when the water is calm, it’s a great spot for snorkeling. Hapuna Bay is the area’s most popular beach. Known as one of the world’s best beaches, its sandy shores and clear water make this a family favorite for swimming, snorkeling, and boogie boarding.
