Situated on the leeward side of the volcano it’s named after, Mauna Kea is a resort community on the Big Island’s beautiful Kohala coast. This area features condominiums, hotels, golf and some excellent dining options making the luxury vacation rental properties in Mauna Kea’s some of the area’s most sought-after.
Things to Do
Being in the heart of the “Golden” Kohala coast means guests staying at our Mauna Kea luxury vacation rental homes are treated to some of the best ocean views this side of the island. The terrain around the community slowly rolls from sea level, up to approximately 1000 feet. This makes for incredible sunset strolls through the resort with views of neighboring Maui. Much to the delight of golfers staying in our Mauna Kea vacation rentals, there are two championship level golf courses here. The Mauna Kea Golf course designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Jr. is considered one of Hawaii’s best, and has consistently been ranked in the world’s top 20 courses by Golf Magazine. Arnold Palmer designed the Hapuna Beach course which offers stunning ocean views from almost every hole. There are some great dive sites in the area including Turtle Pinnacle, the Catacombs and Kalakos Arches. Adventurous nature lovers can head over to the Kohala Zipline to explore the lush forest canopy over the Halawa Gulch. A trip to the summit of Mauna Kea is spectacular at any time of day, but a morning sunrise from here is simply breathtaking. This is perhaps only rivaled by the stargazing offered here at night. Manta Ray point is a big draw for marine life lovers. The water here comes alive after dark as these gentle giants glide across the water during their nightly dance. You can’t come to Hawaii without taking part in a traditional lua and fortunately for guests staying at our luxury vacation rentals in Mauna Kea, there’s one right here on site! For a fascinating look at some of Hawaii’s history, visit the Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve. Here you’ll find more than 1000 etchings of symbols ranging from people, canoes, animals and sea life. These etchings are thought to represent significant events in the lives of Hawaii’s early settlers. The highlight of the Big Island for most people staying at a luxury vacation rental in Mauna Kea is, Volcanoes National Park . Perhaps Hawaii’s biggest tourist attraction, the park is home to two of the state’s three active volcanoes. Complete with 150 miles of hiking trails through lava fields, and past waterfalls and black sand beaches, the park is an incredible site to behold. If conditions allow you to get close enough, you’ll stand in amazement of Mother Nature as Kilauea’s bright lava flows in to the Pacific.
Mauna Kea’s luxury vacation rental homes sit on some of the best stretches of beach in the area negating the need to travel off-site to enjoy the surf and sand; but for those who choose to explore, there are several other beaches close at hand. Anaeho'omalu Bay is a white sand beach located near the Waikoloa Beach Resort, and is one of prettiest beaches in this area. Protected by an offshore reef, Anaeho'omalu’s water tends to be calmer than some of the other beaches making this a good choice for swimming. The beach at Hapuna Bay Beach Park is the nicest one on Hawaii Island with its white sand, clear water, and a small coral reef which keeps the area relatively protected from high surf. Guests staying in a Mauna Kea luxury vacation rental will likely be more than happy to lounge close to home though as the beach at Mauna Kea has conditions similar to Hapuna, and is usually much less crowded.
Restaurants and Nightlife
Staying in a luxury vacation rental property at Mauna Kea means you’ll be able to take advantage of the fabulous dining this resort community has to offer. The Mauna Kea Clambake is legendary so you won’t want to miss this culinary adventure. Every Saturday evening dinner guests can listen to Hawaiian music as they sip cocktails, dance on the sand, and enjoy lobster, shrimp, crab claws, oysters, mussels; and of course clams. With an incredibly diverse wine selection, the Manta & Pavilion wine bar is the perfect place to enjoy a glass with someone special as you take in the incredible ocean views at sunset. The Hua Tree is located right on the beach making it a great choice for breakfast before sunbathing or a mid-afternoon snack.
The Mauna Kea resort area has shops on-site and the Shops at Waikoloa Village are just minutes away. Waikoloa is the shopping destination of choice for many of the guests staying in our Mauna Kea luxury vacation properties Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton and Coach are just a few of the high-end retailers here. The open air Kona International Market in nearby Kailua-Kona is a great place to find unique gifts and souvenirs including locally made art, jewellery and other craft items.
