Oceanfront Puako
Palm Ratings
  • There is an enchanting neighborhood called Puako nestled along the shores of the Kohala Coast. A place where islanders go to play on the white sandy shores, where friendly neighbors greet you with a smile as you pass them by, and where spacious beach houses, each with their own personality and charm, line the quiet street.

Located on the Kohala coast near Waikoloa, Puako is a small oceanfront community known for its quiet ‘beach town’ pace and the stellar snorkeling at the Puako Bay. While the area is a one of Hawaii’s best kept secrets, there are some incredible luxury vacation rental properties in Puako available for those looking to stay outside of the main resort areas on this side of the island while remaining close enough to enjoy their amenities.

Things to Do

Tourists who choose to stay this area are typically planning to lounge poolside at their Puako vacation rental home as the community is mostly residential with few options in the way of shopping or entertainment. Thankfully though, the resort communities of Hualalai, Waikoloa and Mauna Lani are all nearby. Each offers its share of restaurants, shops and services within a few minutes travel time which makes staying in a secluded neighbourhood much more convenient than one would expect. This area receives more than 300 days of sunshine each year and the average ocean temperature is a beautiful 74 F! Water activities are popular here and snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking and paddle boarding are some of the favorites. Guests who enjoy hiking will delight in morning walks along the pristine coastline. Volcanoes National Park boasts 150 miles of hiking trails which wind through various terrains with views of black sand beaches, waterfalls, and spectacular lava flows spilling in to the Pacific Ocean. Puako is home to one of Hawaii’s most significant historical sites. The Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve has more than 1000 lava rock petroglyphs etched in to stone by Hawaii’s early settlers. The Puukohola Heiau / temple is also worth a visit. Built by King Kamehameha the Great, this heiau was dedicated it to Kukailimoku, the god of war to help the king bring all of Hawaiian Islands under his rule. Hawaii’s heiau’s are considered sacred places so it’s important to be respectful of the area, and remember to leave the site as you found it, taking all food and drink containers / wrappers with you. If you like to golf, you’ll want to head over to Hualalai to get in a round at the prestigious Jack Nicklaus designed Hualalai course. Hapuna and Waikoloa are also home to top-rated courses.

Some of our Puako vacation rental homes are located on the beach in the bay area. Puako Bay has a small stretch of sand, but is more known for the marine life found in its tide pools and the extensive off-shore reef. This is a popular location for both snorkeling and diving. Located in Hapuna Bay Beach Park, Hapuna Beach is the island’s best, and has been consistently named one of the top beaches in the country year after year. The sand is white, the water is calm and clear, and the sun is almost always shining! Hapuna Beach is a tourist favorite and is large enough to accommodate its many visitors.

Restaurants and Nightlife

If you are staying in a vacation rental property in Puako, you’ll need to venture in to one of the nearby communities for dining and shopping. Puako is close to the beautiful Waikoloa Village which is home to some of the Big Island’s best restaurants. The Sansei Seafood, Steak & Sushi Bar, and Roy’s Waikoloa Bar & Grill are favorites among guests staying at our Puako luxury vacation rentals. If it’s a cocktail you’re after, you’ll enjoy the Aloha Wine Bar at the Oueen’s Shops in the Waikoloa Resort.

The Shops at Waikoloa Village are just minutes away from our Puako vacation rentals and are known for their appeal to luxury shoppers. Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton and Coach are just a few of the high-end retailers with storefronts here. You can find unique gifts and souvenirs including locally made art, jewellery and other craft items at the popular open air Kona International Market in nearby Kailua-Kona.

This area enjoys mostly sunny skies and receives an average of just nine inches of rain each year. The average temperature range is 75 F – 85 F. Gentle trade winds blow across the island from the north east which keeps things comfortable throughout the year. Depending on the season, the ocean temperature around our Puako vacation rental homes fluctuates between 74 F and 82 F making it ideal for all of the water activities Hawaii is famous for. Our ocean conditions are influenced by the weather and can change from day-to-day. Because the water can be dangerous; especially during high surf, it’s important to exercise caution and always read the warning signs posted on our beaches as these are here for your safety.
