Kona, or Kailua-Kona as it’s also known, is a bustling coastal area on the west side of the Big Island. Known for its mostly sunny weather, great shopping, dining and golf, the Kona district is the most popular tourist area on the Big Island. Our luxury vacation rental properties in Kona are located close to world class amenities and some of the best activities and sightseeing in the area.

Things to Do

If you enjoy golfing, you’ll love Kona. There are three great courses located nearby; two at the Mauna Lani resort, and another one slightly up the coast at Waikoloa. Like most of Hawaii, water activities are big here in Kona. Because the area is sheltered by summits, the winds are much calmer on this side of the island making the water here ideal for snorkelling. There are several significant historical sites near our Kona luxury vacation rental properties and the history buffs in your party should venture out to see them all. Kealakekua Bay is where Captain James Cook first ventured on to Hawaiian land and the bay also turned out to be site of his unfortunate death. Mokuaikauna church is located in historic Kailua Village and was the first Christian church in Hawaii. The area has a regal past to share as it once served as the summer residence of Hawaiian royalty. Located on the popular Ali’i drive, Hulihee Palace showcases artifacts from Hawaii’s history and offers free concerts one Sunday per month. To see some of Hawaii’s earliest documented history, visit the Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve where you’ll find ancient carvings of turtles, canoes and people etched in to lava rock. Your visit to the Big Island would be incomplete without a trip to Volcanoes National Park. Two of Hawaii’s three active volcanoes are here and the park boasts 150 miles of hiking trails which wind through various terrains offering incredible views lush tropical fauna, waterfalls, black sand beaches and bright lava flowing in to the Pacific. If you’re a java junkie we highly recommend you visit one of the nearby coffee farms located on the slopes of Hualalai and Mauna Loa for a plantation tour and a cup of our world famous Kona coffee. Art lovers will want to take a trip in to small but funky Holualoa. The village is home to some amazing small galleries and artist studios and is a great place to pick up some one-of-a-kind treasures. If adventure is what you’re after, head up to Kohala zipline adventures and soar across the amazing forest canopy of the Halawa Gulch or take an evening dive with Manta Rays at the Manta Ray Point.

Beaches

Many of our luxury vacation rental properties in Kona are fronted by beach but there are several in the area if you’d like to venture off-site. Kailua Beach Park is a great choice for families. This mile-long stretch of sand is complimented by a park with picnic tables, a playground for your little ones, and two pools should you find the surf too rough to swim. Kua Bay in Keaha State Beach Park is located in north Kona. This is a great beach with sandy bottomed water making it a favorite spot for swimming, body surfing and boogie boarding. Hapuna Beach is located further up the coast in Hapuna Bay Beach Park. With white sand shores, clear water, and a small coral reef this is considered one of the best beaches in the country.

Restaurants and Nightlife

Our Kona luxury vacation rentals are located in the heart of the island’s most popular tourist destinations so there is no shortage of dining options. The Kona Brewery offers casual outdoor dining with something on the menu for everyone. The sushi at Kenichi Pacific is some of the best in the area, and for more formal dining, try the Coast Grille & Oyster Bar.

Shopping

You won’t need to travel too far from your luxury vacation rental property in Kona to find shopping. From the luxury retailers at Waikoloa, to the large outdoor market at Ali’i Gardens, there is something here for everyone. The Kona International Marketplace is an open air shopping center with more than 30 shops and eateries, and the Farmer’s Market Wednesdays through Sundays is a great place to pick up locally grown produce, flowers and unique Hawaiian crafts.

Weather and Ocean Conditions

The Big Island features 8 different climate zones and our Kona luxury vacation rentals are located in the nicest one! This area enjoys sunny skies and receives an average of just nine inches of rain each year. The average temperature range is 75 F – 85 F. Gentle trade winds blow across the island from the north east which keeps things comfortable throughout the year. Depending on the season, the ocean temperature around our Kona vacation rental homes fluctuates between 74 F and 82 F making it perfectly suited for swimming. The ocean conditions in Hawaii are influenced by the weather and can change from day-to-day. Because the water can be dangerous; especially during high surf, it’s important to exercise caution and always read the warning signs posted on our beaches as these are here for your safety.

Getting Around

Because the area around our Kona vacation rental properties features so much to do, we recommend a rental car for your stay so that you can easily take advantage of all it has to offer.
