At an elevation ranging from 120 to 3000 feet above sea level, the Kohala Ranch is beautiful gated community located on Hawaii Island’s scenic north Kohala coast. This area experiences some of the island’s best views of Hulalai, Mauna Kea, and Mauna Loa volcanoes; and the Pacific Ocean in all of its glory sparkles to the west. Just a short drive from the bustling resorts of south Kohala and the rolling hills of Kamuela, our Kohala Ranch luxury vacation rental properties allow you to truly experience all that the Big Island has to offer.

Things to Do

Staying in a luxury vacation rental property at the Kohala Ranch gives you an opportunity to experience some of Hawaii’s lesser known side. As you venture further north up the Kohala coast, you’ll start to discover a much quieter pace. With its lush green pastures, rolling hills and free roaming cattle, this community borders the start of Hawaii’s paniolo (cowboy) country in Kamuela. Kahua Ranch offers horseback riding tours, but those up to the challenge may opt to hike or explore the area by ATV instead. The Pau Mau Arboretum and Botanical Gardens in nearby Kawaihae is a 45-acre coastal garden with an impressive collection ever-blooming tropical flowers, trees and shrubs. 200 varieties make up their colorful Hibiscus maze, and visitors are treated to sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and the island’s surrounding mountain range. Once home to Hawaiian royalty, the beautiful Waipo Valley, or “Valley of the Kings” stretches one mile across and five miles deep. This is a popular hiking area among guests staying at our Kohala Ranch vacation properties as the valley is filled with beautiful lush foliage and cascading waterfalls. Designated a National Historic Site, the Pu’ukuhola Heiau is another nearby attraction. The temple / heiau was constructed by King Kamehameha the Great in the late 1700’s, and was used by the ancient Kahunas to perform sacrifices to the gods. Hawaii’s heiaus are considered sacred places, so remember to be respectful of the space during your visit. The golfers in your party will be happy to know that the Mauna Kea Golf course designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Jr. is just a short drive away. This course is considered one of the best in Hawaii, and has been consistently ranked in the world’s top 20 courses by Golf Magazine. A scenic drive further up the coast will take you in to the picturesque town of Hawi. Here you’ll find small galleries, unique shops, and great restaurants.

Guests staying at a Kohala Ranch luxury vacation rental are in close proximity to some of south Kohala’s most beautiful beaches. With white sand, clear water, and a small coral reef which keeps the area protected from high surf, the beach at Mauna Kea is a great choice. Its conditions are similar to the popular Hapuna Beach, and it’s usually much less crowded. Spencer Beach is another good option thanks to its excellent swimming conditions. The beach park has full facilities and a lifeguard on-duty during peak hours. There is a large off-shore reef here protecting the shore from high surf making it good for snorkeling, and families with small children or inexperienced swimmers.

Restaurants and Nightlife

There are some great dining options on the Kohala coast, and just a short drive in either direction will lead you to some of the best restaurants in Hawaii. Merriman’s Restaurant in Kamuela is famous for its Hawaii regional cuisine, and the Saturday evening Clambake at the Mauna Kea Resort is legendary. Sip cocktails and dance under the stars to Hawaiian music as you enjoy lobster, shrimp, crab claws, oysters, mussels and clams. The Canoe House at Mauna Lani is a great choice for a romantic dinner. Serving up regional cuisine with an artisanal flair, 85% of your meal will be made of locally sourced ingredients.

For a unique and more intimate shopping experience, guests at our Kohala Ranch luxury vacation rentals will enjoy the short drive north to Hawi. This historic plantation town is filled with charming boutiques and small galleries. The resort areas in south Kohala offer some opportunities for serious retail therapy, including the Shops at Waikoloa, known for their luxury retailers. The Kona International Market in Kailua-Kona is an outdoor shopping center with boutique stores, unique gifts and locally made art, jewellery and other craft items.

Weather and Ocean Conditions

There are 8 different climate zones on the Big Island and our luxury vacation rentals at the Kohala Ranch border an area which tends to be cooler than some of the others on the island, receiving slightly more rain as well. As the elevation increases, the temperature can dip as low as the mid 60’s in January but reach as high as 85 F in the summer. The ocean conditions in Hawaii are influenced by the weather and can change from day-to-day. Because the waters can be dangerous; especially during high surf, it’s important to exercise caution and always read the warning signs posted on our beaches as these are here for your safety.

Getting Around

Guests staying at a Kohala Ranch vacation rental will need a car to travel to nearby towns and area beaches. In addition to providing ease of access to the shopping offered at the south Kohala resorts, Volcanoes National Park is about two hours away, and is one of Hawaii’s most popular tourist attractions.
