Hawaii – The Hollywood of the Pacific!

lights-camera-actionHawaii is known for its beautiful beaches, incredible volcanoes, and year-round balmy climate, but what most people don’t realize is that it is also one of the film industry’s most sought-after filming locations. In fact, there have been so many movies and television shows filmed here that Hawaii has rightfully earned the nickname “Hollywood of the Pacific”!

We’ve put together a list of some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters filmed here in the Hawaiian Islands.

  • Filmed on Oahu in 2004, “50 First Dates” starred Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore was one of the decade’s most popular romantic comedies.

  • Johnny Depp might be considered eye-candy on a regular day, but his “Pirates of the Caribbean” character Captain Jack Sparrow took a back seat to the beautiful back-drop provided by Maui and Molokai during the filming of the third film in the franchise; “At World’s End”.

  • “Catching Fire” was the second film in the blockbuster Hunger Games series. Starring Oscar winners Jennifer Lawrence, the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Donald Sutherland, Catching Fire was filmed on the island of Oahu.

  • Starring George Clooney, 2011’s “The Descendants” was filmed on Kauai and Oahu. Adding to its Hawaii credentials, this film was based on a book written by Hawaii resident Kaui Hart Hemmings.

  • 2008’s hilarious “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” starring Mila Kunis, Jason Segel and Kristen Bell was filmed on Oahu’s north shore.

  • Steven Spielberg’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark” starring Harrison Ford is arguably one of the most successful film franchises in history. It was filmed on the beautiful island of Kauai.

  • Yet another Spielberg franchise, who could forget the return of the dinosaurs to the modern world? Like “Raider’s of the Lost Ark”, 1993’s “Jurassic Park” was also filmed on Kauai.

  • Parts of James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster “Avatar” were filmed on Oahu and Kauai.

In addition to the major motion pictures listed above, Hawaii has also served as a shooting location for a host of television shows. Hawaii Five-O, Dog the Bounty Hunter, Lost, Entourage, Gilligan’s Island, The Brady Bunch, The Amazing Race and even Wheel of Fortune have all filmed here.  You can learn more about the film industry in Hawaii and see a list of past and current productions by visiting the Hawaii Film Office’s website here:  http://filmoffice.hawaii.gov/
