How to Navigate Hawaii’s Pet Quarantine Process: Part 2

Goat Dairy, maui hawaii, vacation destination

In this second and final post on the pet quarantine process, we detail the fastest way for your pet to get through. Read the first entry here.

There are three quarantine programs; the best of the three is for five days or fewer. It costs $224 per pet, and there are a number of qualifications. Here are the most important:

1)   Each pet must have had two rabies vaccinations, with the last vaccination coming at least 90 days before your arrival in Hawaii.

2)   Each pet must have a working microchip implanted before the OIE-FAVN test is performed.

3)   Each pet must have a blood submitted to Kansas State University or DOD for an OIE-FAVN test. An important reminder straight from the State of Hawaii’s checklist: “The day after KSU or DOD received your pet’s blood sample must not be more than 36 months and not less than 120 days before the date of arrival in Hawaii.”

Make sure to have all of your documents in order and/or sent to the appropriate destination. One mistake can mean the difference between five days in quarantine or 120 days.

Remember: As we noted in the first post, there are services available that will do most of the legwork for you. But be sure to do a thorough background check before selecting one.
