First, the good news: Despite the federal government shutdown, Hawaii is open. The airports continue to hum with activity; county- and state-run parks and beaches continue to host flocks of tourists and locals alike; and trails continue to feel the press of hiking boots. Bonus: Pearl Harbor and The Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor and USS Missouri remain open, too.
So, that’s the good news. We’re here, and we’re ready to welcome you and yours with the kind of generous spirit Hawaii is known for.
OK, so let’s talk about the not-so-good news: the closing of our national parks. The following have all been temporarily (hopefully) shuttered as a result of the shutdown, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority:
Ala Kahakai National Historic Trails, Hawaii Island
Haleakala National Park, Maui
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii Island
Kalaupapa National Historic Park, Molokai
Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, Hawaii Island
Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park, Hawaii Island
Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site, Hawaii Island
USS Arizona Memorial, Oahu
USS Bowfin Submarine, Oahu
It’s worth reiterating, however, that, as disappointing as these closures are, the fact is that Hawaii offers a wealth of activities. We’ll keep you posted on any new developments here and on our Twitter and Facebook sites.
