Kilauea is a small town on Kauai’s north shore. What Kilauea lacks in size, it more than makes up for in charm. Complete with fabulous dining and unique boutique shopping, booking a luxury vacation rental in Kilauea allows you to enjoy the look and feel of an intimate island paradise combined with the comfort and convenience of home.
Things to Do
Built in 1913, the Kilauea Lighthouse on Kilauea Point stands 52 feet tall and offers an incredible view of the north shore coastline. If you visit during whale season, you’re likely to catch a glimpse of the visiting humpback whales as they breach the surface just off-shore. Past guests at our luxury vacation rentals in Kilauea have raved about the Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens. The result of years of hard work by its founders Joyce and Ed Doty, the area consists of 13 diverse gardens complete with canyons, lagoons, a beach, an expansive bronze sculpture collection and children’s garden. To get the most out of your visit to the gardens, opt for one of their educational tours. Golfers will enjoy the Prince and Makai courses in Princeville, while families may choose to get in a round of mini golf at Anaina Hou Community Park. If your visit brings you to town on the last Saturday of the month, you won’t want to miss the Kilauea Art Night. Once each month, local artists come out to showcase their creations, and sell their crafts. The event is highlighted by some live music and outstanding food!
While many of our luxury vacation rental homes in Kilauea are beachfront properties, you may want to explore one of the other area beaches. Located between Kalihiwai and Kilauea Point, Kauapea or “Secret Beach” is relatively secluded which is why it is often a “clothing optional” stretch of sand. Because of the powerful surf, this beach is not well-suited for inexperienced swimmers. The scenery is fantastic though and you will often see spinner dolphins swimming off shore. Anini Beach is considered one of the safest on the north shore as it’s protected by a large reef. This tends to keep the waters calm allowing for better swimming conditions.
Restaurants and Nightlife
What makes the food in Hawaii so phenomenal is the blending of cultures that make up our population. You will find Italian, Mexican, Asian and local dishes at any number of local eateries. The Kilauea Bakery is a great lunch spot with delicious soups, salads and pizzas, but their baked treats is where they really shine! Dieters beware! The Lighthouse Bistro has great food and a jazz trio performing on Wednesday nights, and the Kilauea Bistro is good option for cocktails and live music.
Shopping is a favorite pastime of guests staying in our luxury vacation properties in Kilauea, and the Kong Lung Trading company is a great place to pick up high-end goods and one-of-a-kind items. The Ching Young Village Center in nearby Hanalei has everything from clothing and jewellery, to crafts and snacks. There is a great Farmer’s Market on Saturdays on Keneke Street. It starts at 11:30, and items go fast so you’ll want to arrive early!
Weather and Ocean Conditions
Our Kilauea luxury vacation rentals are located on Kauai’s north shore which sees more rain than the other sides of the island. Kilauea’s weather ranges from a low of 68 F to 79 F in the winter, and 74 F to 84 F in July. The Hawaiian trade winds blow across Kauai from the northeast, keeping things comfortable year-round. Ocean swells are influenced by weather conditions and wind so the ocean can change from day to day. Please take precautions and read the safety signs posted on our beaches as these are there for your protection.
With so much to see and do on Kauai, we recommend a rental car which will allow you to explore all that the island has to offer. While cabs are available, getting around Kilauea and its neighbouring communities is much more convenient with your own transportation. Our concierge is available to help with arrangements.
