Kapalua is a popular west Maui resort community located at the base of the Kahalawai Mountains. Complete with top-ranked golf, and white sand beaches, the area’s crowded resorts aren’t your only options for accommodations as there are some stunning luxury vacation rental properties in Kapalua as well.

Things to Do

Set in the midst of two marine sanctuaries and surrounded by the West Maui rainforest, guests staying at a luxury vacation rental in Kapalua often spend their days hiking the incredible landscape around this beautiful resort community. The Coastal Trail starts at Kapalua Bay Beach and winds through the sand dunes at Oneloa bay down to D.T. Fleming Beach Park. The Honolua Beach and Maunalei Arboretum Trails are also popular, and feature some incredible tree and plant species from around the world. Much to the delight of golfers, Kapalua is home to the Bay and Plantation courses, with the latter being hailed as Hawaii’s best golf course by Golf Magazine. Located at Makaluapuna Point on Maui’s northwest shore, Hawaii’s Dragon’s Teeth is an “off-the-beaten track” tourist attraction that’s not to be missed. Hundreds of years ago when the West Maui volcano was still active, it poured its lava in to the sea. Lighter and finer grained than most lava, a combination of sea swells and strong winds pushed it back in to the shore in an upward motion leaving it to cool in to the unique formations that remain today.  Because of their jagged peaks, the rocks quickly earned the name Dragon’s Teeth. The Nakalele Blowhole is another popular tourist draw. When the waves reach the shore, water is forced into a hole in the lava shelf which prompts a geyser like eruption. If your Hawaii vacation brings you to the area in June, you won’t want to miss the Kapalua Food & Wine Festival where chef’s, sommeliers and wine makers come together for the islands most popular culinary event. If you’d like to get up close and personal with Hawaii’s ocean life, snorkeling at the Molokini Crater is a must. Listed as one of the top ten diving spots in the world, the small volcanic crater is believed to have erupted over 200,000 years ago and is home to more than 250 marine species.

Beaches

Guests staying in one of Kapalua’s luxury vacation rental properties can spend their days lounging on what Conde Nast Traveler Magazine once called the “World’s Best Beach”. Protected by two reefs, the beautiful Kapalua Bay has a sheltered white sand beach with calm waters perfect for swimming and even better for snorkeling. The butterfly, parrot, damsel and trigger fish can be found dancing in the waters here, as well as the moorish idol, trigger fish, and the Humuhumunukunukuapuaa. With a great view of Molokai, Oneloa or Ironwoods Beach is a small stretch of sand along the coastline perfect for an evening stroll. The surf can be quite powerful here though so this beach isn’t recommended for swimming. DT Fleming Beach Park is a great place for family picnics and a popular spot for boogie boarding.

Restaurants and Nightlife

There are some fabulous dining options around our Kapalua luxury vacation homes and guests will enjoy a variety of cuisines to choose from. For an outstanding ocean-side breakfast, head over to the Gazebo Restaurant at the Napili Resort. The Maui Brewing Company is also close-by and offers up traditional pub faire and an opportunity to tour the facilities with a stop in to their tasting room to sample their award winning ales and lagers. If you’re looking for fine dining, visit the Banyan Tree restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton in Lahaina.

Shopping

Because our Kapalua vacation rental homes are located in a resort community, guests have a great selection of boutiques to shop at here on site. Those looking for more options can visit the Outlets of Maui in Lahaina for great discounts on brands like Adidas, Coach, Guess, Gap, and Michael Kors.

Weather and Ocean Conditions

Kapalua’s luxury vacation rental properties are located at the gateway to Maui’s greener side. This means the area receives slightly more rain than other parts of the island but showers are relatively short-lived and tend to pass quickly. The temperature doesn’t vary too much throughout the year with an average high of 78 F in January and 85 F in July. Hawaii’s gentle trade winds blow in from the north east and keep things comfortable as the temperatures rise. The average ocean temperatures around our Kapalua vacation rental homes is 76 F which means you’ll likely be spending a lot of time splashing around the Pacific! Please remember that the ocean around Hawaii can be extremely rough and conditions can change from day to day. Always read the safety signs posted on our beaches as these are here for your protection.

Getting Around

While there is plenty to see and do around Kapalua’s luxury vacation rental properties, we do recommend a rental car for your stay so that you can explore the surrounding communities and easily access all that Maui has to offer.
